“Green” claims are becoming increasingly common on store shelves. It can be difficult to distinguish a genuine environmental approach from a mere sales argument. Let us examine what chemistry really tells us.

A detergent can affect the environment in several ways: through the origin of its ingredients, its biodegradability and its toxicity to aquatic environments after disposal.

Three Criteria That Really Matter

A genuinely more environmentally responsible product addresses all three areas at once. By contrast, a product that appears “green” only because of its packaging or colour does nothing to reduce its actual environmental impact. This is where plant-based ingredients become truly meaningful.

Are the ingredients derived from petroleum or renewable resources?

BIODEGRADABILITY

The ability to break down naturally after use.

TOXICITY

The actual impact on aquatic environments after disposal.

“Natural” does not automatically mean “harmless”, just as “chemical” does not mean “dangerous”. What matters is the precise nature of the molecules used and the quality of the formulation.
