Olive oil soap has been used throughout the Mediterranean region for centuries. For generations, people used it simply because “it worked”, without always knowing why. Today, chemistry helps explain its effectiveness.
The secret lies in a molecule with two sides. When olive oil is transformed into soap through a process called saponification, it produces molecules with one end that is attracted to water and another that is attracted to grease.
The grease-attracting end attaches itself to dirt and oily substances, while the water-attracting end allows them to be carried away during rinsing. Dirt that would normally be insoluble in water is therefore captured and removed.
